The same day as opening ceremony of the Olympics in Peking the war between Russia and Georgia broke out. The Russian army did not need many days to completely crush the Georgian army that stood on its own. The disputed areas of South Ossetia and Abkhazia are at the moment out of reach for Georgians and Russia has declared them independent states. This was a political war but the people suffered.
