The mother in the park - China
2008-03-01The mother in the park – about being a woman with a career Mrs Zhou sits on a footstool in the Shanghai People’s park. In front of her are three white pieces of cardboard, each of which displays the essential information about each of her unmarried daughters: year of birth (1977, 1982 and 1982), height, level of education and monthly salary. Ms Zhou sits quietly by herself, looking out in the distance seemingly unperturbed by the hundreds of other middle-aged parents here, all hoping to find partners for their children. Zhou is already an old-timer here – for more than a year she’s come here every week – and reacts only if somebody shows interest for one of her daughters.
